AirPods 5: noise cancellation starts at $129

Both versions have ANC, with differences in battery life, controls and charging. Sales in Brazil begin September 18.

Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9 with active noise cancellation (ANC) in both versions. ¹ In Brazil, the basic model costs R$1,499; the version with a wireless charging case costs R$1,699.³

U.S. prices are $129 and $149.¹ In 2024, AirPods 4 launched at $129 without ANC and $179 with it.⁵ The new generation therefore lowers the entry price for noise cancellation in this lineup by $50.

Noise cancellation and hearing your surroundings

Apple says ANC removes up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation.¹ That figure is the manufacturer’s comparison; how useful it feels in a café or on a bus depends on performance in those conditions.

Transparency mode lets surrounding sounds through. Adaptive Audio blends that mode with ANC as the environment changes. Conversation Awareness lowers media volume when the wearer starts speaking.⁴ These settings serve different needs: hearing an announcement, moving through a noisy space or having a conversation without adjusting the volume.

What the extra R$200 buys

The version with a wireless charging case adds volume adjustment by swiping along the earbud stem.⁴ Battery life and charging also differ.²

These are Apple’s estimates with ANC enabled.² Per-charge battery life helps with planning a long listening session; the total with the case includes breaks to recharge the earbuds.

Live Translation relies on an iPhone

Live Translation supports Brazilian Portuguese and requires an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone with Apple Intelligence enabled.³ The iPhone processes the translation and plays it through the earbuds. Software and firmware must be up to date; after the languages are downloaded, processing can take place on the phone without internet access.⁶

That dependency matters when buying earbuds for travel: the phone they’ll be paired with needs checking alongside the languages of the conversation.

When sales begin

Brazilian preorders open on September 11 at 9 a.m., with availability beginning September 18.³ U.S. preorders opened on September 9.¹
