The Pixel 11 traded benchmarks for local AI
Tensor G6 promises on-device AI up to 3.5 times faster on 3.5 times less energy. The Pixel 11 Pro also ships with 4 GB less RAM than the Pixel 10 Pro, which is the one resource local AI needs most, and costs $100 more.

On August 12 Google introduced four phones: the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, at $899, $1,099, $1,299 and $1,899, with pre-orders opening the same day and retail availability on August 20.¹ ³ The launch barely claims this is the fastest phone of the year. The pitch is what the phone can do without sending anything out.
That is an engineering decision with a bill attached. Die area is finite: every square millimeter spent on the AI block is area the CPU and GPU didn't get, and every watt of thermal budget burned by a local model is a watt unavailable to hold a high clock in a game. Google picked where to spend. You can see the result both in what the phone now does by itself and in the comparisons it still loses.
Every number came from the company
Google says Tensor G6 delivers 25% faster web browsing, 15% quicker app launches and 50% more TPU compute. The TPU is the block that actually runs models. Combined with the latest Gemini Nano, that supposedly makes on-device AI tasks "up to 3.5 times faster while using up to 3.5 times less energy."¹ Engadget also recorded a claim of 20% better power efficiency than Tensor G5, and more than 30 hours of battery life.⁴ There is a new image signal processor, and a Titan M3 security chip that brings post-quantum cryptography to secure boot.¹
All of that is first-party measurement with no published methodology. It tells you where the company placed its bet. It is not a substitute for third-party testing.
The chip that was going to be 2 nm
For months, hardware coverage treated it as settled that Tensor G6 would debut TSMC's 2-nanometer process, making it the first phone chip on the foundry's newest process node.⁵ It didn't. On August 13, a day after the event, Google hardware VP Peng Yu-chun told Taiwanese news agency CNA that the G6 is built on 3 nm.⁵ GSMArena's spec sheet lists "Tensor G6 (3 nm)", the same node as the G5.⁶
The correction matters because it changes where the promised efficiency has to come from. With no new node, the gains have to be architectural: seven cores in an unusual arrangement (one C1-Ultra at 4.1 GHz, four C1-Pro at 3.4 GHz and two at 2.65 GHz), a PowerVR GPU in place of the Mali part, and a bigger TPU.⁶ That is harder work than inheriting better transistors from TSMC, and it explains why the company talks so much about energy per task and so little about peak performance.
On CPU performance, what little comparison exists isn't kind to the Tensor. A Pixel 11 Pro XL entry appeared on Geekbench 7 before launch, at 2,112 single-core and 5,196 multi-core, roughly 7% above the G5 in single-core and roughly 12% below it in multi-core, measured against the reference results Primate Labs publishes.⁸ It is a single submission on pre-release firmware compared to reference figures, so it counts as an early signal and nothing more. The signal points where the five previous Tensor generations pointed.
What actually runs on the phone
Marketing blurs the two cases, and they are worth separating.
Running locally, no connection required: speech recognition and transcription, Gboard text suggestions, Rambler, which strips run-on sentences and filler words out of dictation, American Sign Language to text on the Pro Fold, and the new camera set. Magic Capture picks the best frame out of a burst of roughly 500, and Camera Looks rewrites color lookup tables at capture time.³ ¹⁰
Depending on the cloud, a subscription, or both: full Gemini Intelligence, image generation, Video Boost, and the automations where the assistant phones a business on your behalf.³ ¹⁰ The Pro models include six months of Google AI Pro.¹ ² The Pixel 10 Pro came with a full year.¹² After the term expires, the bill is yours.
Google's own small print completes the picture. Features are available "for select countries and languages to users 18+", "feature availability will vary; some features may require subscription", and on-device AI requires "devices with advanced capabilities and specifications, including on-device Gemini Nano models, 12GB+ RAM".²
The RAM arithmetic doesn't add up
The Pixel 10 Pro launched at $999 with 128 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM across every configuration.¹² ¹³ The Pixel 11 Pro launches at $1,099 with 256 GB and 12 GB of RAM; 16 GB only returns at the 512 GB tier.³ ⁷ The cleanest comparison is the larger model: the Pro XL went from $1,199 to $1,299 with the same 256 GB of storage and 4 GB less memory.⁷ ¹² ¹⁴
So the company cut memory on the phone it positions as a local-AI machine, whose published requirement for that AI is 12 GB or more of RAM.² The Pixel 11 Pro now sits exactly on the floor of Google's own spec.
Google hasn't hidden the reason. On July 24, ahead of the event, Shakil Barkat, vice president of devices and services, told 9to5Google that "there's never been an increase in memory prices like the world's going through right now", that the company had "shielded our consumers from supply fluctuations for as long as possible", and that "economics have fundamentally shifted and we're not immune to that". He cited Morgan Stanley figures putting a gigabyte of RAM at $2.80 in 2025 and $12 in 2026, and said Google has a dedicated effort to cut memory use across Android and the app ecosystem.¹¹
The explanation is true and insufficient. This is the same memory crunch that already raised the price of consoles, laptops and SSDs, now reaching phones. But when an input gets expensive, the manufacturer decides what to cut, and Google cut the component its product thesis rests on. If the Android optimizations deliver, 12 GB holds; if they don't, the Pro owner finds out over the seven years of updates on offer.¹ No public multitasking or local-AI stress testing exists yet to settle it either way.
The camera decides before you do
The Pixel 11 gets a 48-megapixel main sensor with, per Google, 56% more light sensitivity, plus a 5x telephoto. The Pro models get a new main sensor, a 48-megapixel telephoto, Portrait Mode at 5x, Night Sight "up to 4 and a half times faster", and Pro Zoom out to 120x.¹
That 120x deserves attention. In the previous generation, Google described the Pixel 10 Pro's Pro Zoom as "a cutting-edge single-step diffusion model entirely on-device in just seconds".¹⁵ A diffusion model draws. It does not enlarge what the sensor captured; it produces plausible detail where there was no information. For the Pixel 11, the company says only that Tensor G6 and "the latest imaging models" power 120x Pro Zoom, without saying at what magnification the reconstruction begins or whether it can be switched off.¹
There is a serious counterweight from the same company. Since the Pixel 10, every photo taken in the camera app carries C2PA Content Credentials, and the app was certified at Assurance Level 2, the highest level the conformance program currently defines. Each image is signed with its own key, so photos can't be linked to each other or to the photographer, and the phone can apply a trusted timestamp even offline; Google Photos attaches credentials to images edited with AI tools.¹⁶
The arrangement is odd and honest at once: the company that puts a generative model between the sensor and the file is also the one signing, at the source, the record that processing happened. The standard doesn't prevent invention; it records it.
Privacy: what stays and what leaves
The privacy case for local AI is the most direct one: work that genuinely runs on the phone never becomes a request to a server. That covers transcription, dictation, text suggestions and most of the camera.
For everything else, Google built a middle path. Private AI Compute, announced on November 11, 2025, runs larger models on servers inside hardware enclaves called Titanium Intelligence Enclaves. Remote attestation and encryption connect the phone to that sealed environment, and Google says what is processed there stays "accessible only to you and no one else, not even Google".¹⁷
That leaves phone privacy resting on two different kinds of guarantee: one anyone can verify (the data never left) and one that requires trusting the vendor's architecture and audits. On August 11, Counterpoint Research published an agentic-AI privacy and security scorecard built on a survey of 12,225 users across six countries, scoring data isolation and security, transparency and user control, and it placed Pixel ahead of iPhone, Galaxy, Motorola and OPPO.¹⁸ It is a comparative assessment by a market research firm, and Google cites it in the launch material.
What still can't be stated
The modem is the clearest case. The suspicion going around is that the Pixel 11 drops Samsung's Exynos modem, the historical culprit behind heat and battery drain, for MediaTek's M90. What actually exists is one line: Android Authority found MediaTek named on page 30 of the radio-exposure report filed with the FCC for model GZDQ6, the Pro Fold.⁹ A SAR report covers radio emissions, so it is a plausible place for the modem supplier to surface, and the piece itself treats the find as a clue rather than a confirmation. Google didn't name the modem at launch, and the published spec sheets don't name it either.⁶
Battery sits in the same position. The 30-hour figure is Google's;¹ ⁴ the published capacities are 4,985 mAh on the Pixel 11 and 5,115 mAh on the Pro XL, charging at 30 W and 45 W.⁶ ⁷ The one third-party dataset is the European energy-label registry: efficiency class B on all four models, batteries rated to keep at least 80% of capacity after 1,000 cycles, repairability B, and in free-fall testing a grade A for the Pixel 11 and Pro XL (270 drops) against B for the Pixel 11 Pro (180 drops).¹⁹ Those are figures a manufacturer declares to a regulator, and not independent lab results. They still work for comparing the models against each other, and they put the Pro behind its siblings on drop resistance.
How the people watching closely reacted
In the Hacker News thread on the announcement, the dominant note was marginal upgrade: readers saying the changes don't justify replacing a working phone, others planning to wait for the Pixel 10 line to fall in price, and a specific complaint about the drop from 16 GB to 12 GB of RAM at the entry of the Pro line, with some saying they now lean toward a Pixel 10 Pro instead. The cut to the Google AI Pro bundle, from a year down to six months, also made the list of grievances.²⁰ It is a technical forum, with the bias that carries. It is worth noting because the irritation lands precisely on the number Google's own documentation sets as the floor for on-device AI.
Brazil pays a different bill
The Pixel 11 has no official Brazilian launch, and the Pixel line never has had one.²¹ The conversions that circulated in the local press, roughly R$4,600 to R$9,800, are straight dollar maths with no tax, no shipping and no local warranty. Importing costs considerably more than that, and leaves the buyer without authorized service through seven years of updates that assume the phone stays intact.
There is a less obvious practical effect. Much of what justifies the price is conditioned on "select countries and languages",² and Brazilian Portuguese is rarely in the first wave. Buying a phone for its local AI and getting the build where much of it doesn't speak your language yet is the likeliest outcome for an importer today.
Verdict
The Pixel 11 is consistent with what it promises. Google spent silicon area and energy budget on running models locally, shipped features that genuinely work offline, and paired them with an image-provenance chain certified at the highest level the C2PA program currently defines.¹⁶ If you buy a phone for on-device photo processing, dictation, transcription and translation, this is exactly that product.
What doesn't add up is this year's arithmetic. On raw CPU performance Tensor sits where it has always sat, and the only public signal available suggests multi-core below the previous generation.⁸ Prices went up $100 across the line, and the year of Google AI Pro that came with the Pro became six months.¹ ¹² And memory, the resource local AI depends on most, shrank by 4 GB on the Pro, leaving it on the floor of the requirement Google itself publishes. The DRAM crunch explains the higher cost; it doesn't explain why the cut landed there.
The independent battery, heat and multitasking measurements that only arrive after a few weeks of real use are worth waiting for. If the MediaTek modem clue is confirmed, if the modem delivers the expected gain, and if Android's memory work holds 12 GB, this is a good expensive phone. If it doesn't hold, the Pixel 11 Pro will be remembered as the device that bet everything on local AI and saved money on exactly what local AI eats.
