iPhone 18 Pro: what variable aperture changes
The camera gives users more control over light and focus. A20 Pro and cooling change too; here are the prices and Brazil release dates.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, announced on September 9, add variable aperture to the main camera. ¹ It gives photographers more choices before editing begins.
Brazilian prices start at R$11,999 for the Pro and R$12,999 for the Pro Max, both with 256GB. They reach stores on September 18.⁴ Watch the presentation in Apple’s full launch event.
How aperture changes a photograph
The 48MP main camera offers four settings: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4. Pro controls also let users adjust shutter speed and white balance.²
A smaller f-number means a larger opening, which admits more light. Closing the aperture increases depth of field, the range of distances that appears sharp.⁷
In a portrait, separating a person from the background may be desirable. In other scenes, keeping several objects sharp may matter more. Aperture helps make that choice.⁷
The phone can also adjust aperture automatically; using the manual controls is optional.³
Three cameras with different roles
Both phones pair the main camera with 48MP ultrawide and telephoto cameras. The telephoto offers a 4x view, equivalent to 100mm. Apple describes the 8x mode, equivalent to 200mm, as 12MP optical-quality zoom.²
That distinction helps when comparing camera modes: the larger zoom number doesn’t mean there’s a second, 8x telephoto lens. Framing, resolution and image quality need to be considered together.
A20 Pro and cooling for longer sessions
A20 Pro uses a 2-nanometer manufacturing process.¹ Apple also redesigned the vapor chamber, which spreads heat inside the phone, and claims up to 40% higher sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.³
That kind of improvement matters when a demanding task continues, as it does during a game. A quick benchmark and an extended session measure different conditions. Testing a sustained-performance claim calls for clear information about temperature and test duration.

These are Apple’s announced prices in each market.¹ ⁴ In Brazil, preorders open on September 12 at 9 a.m. Brasília time, with availability beginning September 18. Storage options extend to 2TB.⁴
